Job Description:
A postdoctoral associate position is available in the Zhang Lab for a highly motivated candidate. Our lab is interested in the interplay between sensory systems and internal physiology. For example, our sensation is largely impacted by the internal state (e.g. food smells and tastes better when we are hungry); conversely, taste stimulation triggers downstream signaling responses, and long-term taste/diet experience shapes physiology and behavior. To dissect neuronal and molecular mechanisms underlying this interplay, we leverage multidisciplinary approaches including single-cell RNA sequencing, live animal calcium imaging and photometry, CRISPR-based genetic engineering, optogenetics, and animal behavioral analysis. We use the mammalian taste pathway as a model, to understand how the nervous system integrates external and internal information to drive behavior and maintain homeostasis. The postdoctoral associate will have considerable freedom to develop projects that fit the broad scope of our laboratory.
Qualifications:
Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in a field of biological sciences. A successful candidate will have a record of research productivity, be able to work collaboratively, and demonstrate clear logic and creativity in answering biological questions. Candidates who have previous experience in neuroscience are preferred.
To Apply:
Applicants should submit the following materials by email to jin.zhang@umassmed.edu: a letter describing current research activities and your interest in this position, a CV (including publications), and contact information for three references, one of which should be your Ph.D. advisor.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Zhang lab is seeking an energetic and highly motivated individual interested in a full-time salaried position as a Research Associate 1, conducting research in the areas of sensory biology and neuroscience. The research associate will receive direct mentorship from and work closely with the PI, Dr. Jin Zhang, which will provide invaluable research experience to apply for Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., and M.D. programs.
Our lab is interested in the interplay between sensory biology and internal physiology. We are currently studying the mammalian taste pathway to understand how the nervous system integrates external and internal information to drive behavior and maintain homeostasis. The research associate will learn state-of-the-art multidisciplinary techniques, including single-cell RNA sequencing, CRISPR-based animal engineering, stereotactic brain injections, calcium imaging, optogenetics, and animal behavioral analysis.
Additional Responsibilities/Qualifications
- Prior experience in neuroscience techniques in the mouse model, or knowledge in programming and data analysis languages is preferred.
- The ideal candidate will actively seek to understand the science behind the experiments and work well both independently and in a team.
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) or designee, the Research Associate I provides operational support to the laboratory. The Research Associate I will perform research experiments as defined by the PI.
