Overview

The Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff is a key role on the Chancellor’s senior management team. Reporting directly to the Chancellor, this position facilitates communication and collaboration among various constituents and stakeholders in the institution. The Chief of Staff will participate in and support strategic planning, operations management, meeting and project coordination, and relationship management. The Chief of Staff handles various complex, time-sensitive issues that cross public, institutional, and inter-organizational dimensions and builds and fosters partnerships both internally and externally. 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Supports the chancellor with the development and execution of strategic priorities.
  • Coordinates cross-functional initiatives, ensuring alignment with institutional goals.
  • Fosters and leads collaboration among and between the chancellor’s senior leadership team.
  • Directs the administration and operations of the chancellor’s office, including setting priorities and resolving organizational issues.
  • Supervises the Chancellor’s administrative support staff, including his executive assistant and driver.
  • Acts as a principal point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
  • Leads and supports special projects and/or high-level meetings and initiatives, as requested.
  • Serves as a resource and primary point of contact for chairs, administrative leaders, university leadership, and other stakeholders.
  • Acts as a key contact and conduit to UMass Memorial leadership and stakeholders on behalf of the chancellor. Develops partnerships and collaborative opportunities with those leaders.
  • Participates in strategic planning, annual budget preparation and hearings, and quarterly financial performance meetings. 
  • Oversees the communications strategy and execution between the chancellor’s office and various stakeholders within and external to the college.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves issues on behalf of the chancellor, as appropriate.
  • Prepares and prioritizes issues for the chancellor’s attention and direction.
  • Assists with budget development and resource allocation to align with the chancellor’s priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Public Administration, Public Health, Health Care Administration or related field or equivalent; Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH), Public Administration (MPA), or Business Administration (MBA) preferred.
  • 7-10 years significant management experience in higher education, health care or not-for-profit field.
  • Significant experience as a senior level administrator at a top tier medical school, health care organization, or within a government/government agency.
  • Strong communications skills as evidenced by preparation of oral and written materials including presentations, proposals, reports and memoranda both technical and confidential in nature.
  • Excellent team building and collaboration building skills, with a demonstrated track record of bringing together independent stakeholders to deliver impactful and meaningful work.
  • Experience working effectively with multiple constituencies.
  • High level of diplomacy, discretion, and problem-solving skills required.

Additional Information

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of academic and health care arenas preferred.
