Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

 

UMass Chan Medical School is seeking a motivated student or recent graduate to serve as a Sustainability Intern supporting a variety of sustainability programs and initiatives across campus.
This internship provides hands-on experience working on projects related to climate action, waste reduction, sustainable operations, community engagement, and education. The Sustainability Intern will assist with research, communications, and program development aligned with UMass Chan’s Together for a Healthy Planet sustainability pillars.


This is an excellent opportunity for a student or recent graduate interested in sustainability, environmental studies, public health, or community engagement to gain professional experience in higher education and facilities management. This is a temporary, non-benefitted role.

 

 

Responsibilities

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

The Sustainability Intern will support the Office of Sustainability and Facilities Management with a range of projects, including but not limited to:


Program Support & Project Assistance
• Assist with sustainability initiatives across the Together for a Healthy Planet pillars: Decarbonization & Resiliency, Natural Resource Use, Environmental Justice, Environmental Stewardship, Integrated Planning, and Fiscal Responsibility.

• Support planning and implementation of campus sustainability events, campaigns, and outreach efforts.


Research & Data Support
• Conduct basic research on sustainability best practices and policies.
• Assist with data collection, tracking, and organization for sustainability programs and reports.


Communications & Outreach
• Help develop content for newsletters, websites, and digital communications related to sustainability initiatives.
• Assist in creating promotional materials such as flyers, social media posts, and presentations.


Resource & Content Development
• Help update and organize sustainability resources and guides for students, faculty, and staff.

 

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Current student or recent graduate (within the past 1–2 years) in environmental studies, sustainability, public health, communications, or a related field.• Demonstrated interest in sustainability and environmental issues.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Good organizational and time management skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional environment.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Coursework or experience related to sustainability, environmental science, or public health.
• Experience with digital content tools (Canva, LibGuides, or website platforms).
• Interest in marketing, outreach, or event planning.
• Experience participating in student organizations or community service activities.
