Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the direct supervision of the Manager or designated representative, Skilled Laborer II is responsible for performing tasks requiring advanced skills and expertise in the maintenance, upkeep, and improvement of the Medical Center grounds. This role also includes the application of pesticides in accordance with safety and regulatory standards, as well as providing support to other trades as needed.

Responsibilities

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform a variety of tasks related to the maintenance, upkeep, and beautification of grounds, including lawn mowing, fertilizing, trimming, pruning, and planting flowers, shrubs, and trees.
  • Assist in pavement repairs and resurfacing activities to maintain smooth, safe driving and walking surfaces across campus grounds. Perform maintenance and repair tasks for sidewalks, roadways, and parking areas, including sweeping debris, power washing, striping parking spaces, and ensuring clear markings for safety.
  • Conduct snow and ice removal tasks, including shoveling walkways, plowing roadways, sanding surfaces, and operating sidewalk snow removal equipment. Be on-call/standby during winter months to respond promptly to snow and ice accumulation, ensuring timely and effective removal to maintain safety and accessibility.
  • Clean, wash, and refuel medical center vehicles, ensuring they are ready for use and properly maintained. Perform routine checks on vehicles to ensure they remain in good working condition.
  • Operate and perform basic maintenance and repairs on ground equipment, such as lawn mowers, sweepers, trimmers, snow blowers, and other related machinery. Ensure that all equipment is functioning optimally, conducting routine inspections, lubrication, cleaning, and minor repairs as needed. Report any major equipment malfunctions to supervisors and coordinate necessary repairs or replacements.
  • Manage the storage of parts, equipment, and supplies maintained by the grounds department, ensuring that materials are organized, accessible, and properly stored to prevent damage or loss. Assist in inventory management by tracking supplies, reporting low stock, and maintaining accurate records for equipment and tools.
  • Move furniture, files, and other items across the campus as needed for various projects, events, or office relocations. Ensure that items are handled with care and moved efficiently to avoid damage.
  • Operate steam cleaning equipment, including pressure washers, to clean sidewalks, parking areas, building exteriors, and other surfaces around campus. Ensure the effective removal of dirt, grime, and stains, maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of outdoor spaces.
  • Regularly remove trash and debris from pathways, roadways, parking lots, and other campus areas to maintain cleanliness and safety. For hazardous or unusual waste situations requiring Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) assistance, promptly secure the area, notify the appropriate parties, and facilitate the removal process.
  • Perform regular cleanout of animal waste and debris around dumpsters and trash collection areas to maintain sanitary conditions and prevent pest infestations.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment and ensure work areas are secured from potential hazards.
  • Assist with the installation of new irrigation systems, including trenching, laying pipe, and connecting components
  • Maintain irrigation systems, including pumps, sprinkler heads, valves, and pipes.
  • Use two-way radios to communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and other departments during daily operations and emergencies.
  • Apply herbicides and pesticides
  • Drive light vehicles, including passenger cars, vans, box trucks, to transport materials, tools, and equipment to various campus locations efficiently and safely.
  • While in the performance of routine duties; may be required, as needed to perform all work associated with all maintenance trades of an equal or lower graded classification, where the work or task does not require a specific license.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience
  • 3 Years of related experience in landscaping and pesticide applications
  • Working knowledge of common tools required for maintenance, landscaping, and upkeep of grounds
  • Pesticide license or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Valid Drivers License
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations and work varied shifts and/or irregular hours.
