Research Area
The gastrointestinal tract plays an essential role in our overall health and well-being. It is home to trillions of beneficial commensal microbes while also serving as an entry site for various pathogens. Consequently, the intestinal immune system must remain tolerant to foreign non-harmful stimuli while protecting against infections. Emerging evidence indicates that an unregulated immune response in the intestine is causally associated with numerous human diseases. The Zhou laboratory studies, at the cellular and molecular levels, 1) how immune tolerance and homeostasis are established in the gut; 2) how dysregulation of these pathways contributes to intestinal inflammation, disease progression, and aging; 3) how we can harness approaches to restore gut homeostasis, develop treatments for human diseases (e.g., IBD, etc.), and promote healthy aging and longevity. The laboratory specializes in multiple transcriptomic sequencing techniques, mouse genetic models, pre-clinical disease models, and translational human sample analysis.
