POSITION SUMMARY:
The Schafer lab focuses on understanding how the immune system interacts with the nervous system to regulate brain plasticity and inflammation in disease (Alzheimer’s, MS, autism, etc.). We use a variety of techniques such as confocal microscopy, single cell RNAseq, spatial transcriptomics, mouse genetics, and behavior to address how microglia modify synapses and, in turn, how these mechanisms go awry in disease. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) or designee, the Research Associate I provides operational support to the laboratory. The Research Associate I will perform research experiments as defined by the PI.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The RA Grade 40 positions will provide technical support on collaborative projects to assess how the immune system and immune cells impact the brain in the context of aging and neurodegeneration. There will also be opportunities to take on independent projects. Among the techniques that a RA would be involved in include preparation of brain tissue for immunofluorescence microscopy, confocal and super resolution imaging, tissue culture, preparation of tissue for RNA sequencing, and spatial transcriptomics. Candidates should feel comfortable working with mice, work well in a group, and have a strong ability to multi-task. Skills that are preferred but are not required include preparation of tissue for immunofluorescence microscopy, experience imaging on a microscope, experience in coding, and experience with tissue dissection.
