Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor or designee, the Safety System Technician installs, repairs, operates, tests, and modifies equipment used in supervised fire detection, notification and suppression systems throughout the University and off-site facilities. Has responsibility to insure a fire safe environment, provide proper training to all facilities staff members, maintains test and repair records.  

 

 

Responsibilities

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organize pertinent data and document work through the Facilities work order system.
  • Maintain and inspect all portable fire extinguishers and fire related systems as scheduled.
  • Generate reports and documentation of drills, testing and inspection activities.
  • Install conduit, cabling and related devices for systems maintenance and expansion.
  • Correct, modify, and revise drawings to reflect new installations and changes.
  • Maintain spare parts inventory and other material as needed.
  • Perform weekly, monthly, semi-annual and annual  maintenance and inspections on all fire-related systems and equipment as the tests relate to NFPA and JCAHO requirements
  • Upgrade existing systems to newer technologies in a comprehensive manner.
  • While in the performance of routine duties; may be required, needed to perform all work associated with all maintenance trades of an equal or lower grade classification; where the work or task does not require a specific license.
  • Perform related duties as required.

 

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Massachusetts System Technicians License (Class “D”).
  • 3 years experience working with computerized “intelligent” fire alarm systems.
  • Working knowledge of central station fire alarm configuration and various automatic sprinkler systems.
  • Normal visual acuity, manual dexterity, ability to lift 50 lbs., work from ladders, and in confined spaces. 
  • Working knowledge of the Massachusetts State Fire Regulations (NFPA) and JCAHO Standards.
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor or designee

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Functional supervision over technical, construction, or maintenance employees for assigned projects or tasks; ensures conformance with codes rules regulations and safety standards.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

May perform work in all Medical Center facilities and is subject to possible exposure to chemicals, gases, electrical shock; may work in confined spaces on ladders. Ability to perform physically arduous tasks; normal dexterity, visual acuity, ability to lift up to 50 lbs., ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolding, and work in confined areas
