Information Technology at The University of Massachusetts Medical School has a unique opportunity for an Engineering Intern to join us in developing Machine Learning Algorithms. You will be working with an IT Engineering team who are passionate about building solutions that help solve their customer requests. 


During the internship we will collaborate together to leverage technology to

  1. Work with the customer to understand the customer requirements
  2. Automate the manual process of Random Moment Time Studies. These studies allow for School Districts in various states to retrieve money for services provided to special needs students.  As part of the studies 1000’s of data points are manually read and flagged each quarter,  you will be part of the team building a system to automatically read the text and have the system “learn”   what the correct flag should be.   This will save thousands of dollars for school districts allowing them to use those dollars to provide better services.
  3. Build Test plans to confirm the algorithms are working correctly
  4. Build Automated Tests to confirm changes in data do not break the algorithm

Together, we will apply best practices in software development to build innovative solutions that solve our customer’s needs



  • Utilize innovative ideas and approaches to assist in the development of working models to serve the needs of our faculty, students and researchers
  • Complete a project from start to finish and write-up and present the work product to the UMass community
  • Participate in team projects
  • Conduct online research
  • Perform other duties as required



  • Must be a currently enrolled student in a higher education institution or recent graduate
  • Solid analytical and communication skills
  • Attention to detail with the ability to collect and record information from a wide variety of sources
  • Must be reliable and able to set consistent work hours
  • Proven interest in IT and passion in furthering the mission of UMMS
  • Must have above average academic performance

  • Experience with building C#, Java Web Applications
  • Experience with Automated Test tools


This is paid, 100% offsite internship position

Duration: 6 months with possibility for extension up to 12 months

Hours: 20-40
