GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:    

Under the general supervision of the Director, the Maintenance Co-Generation Engineer III supervises the maintenance and repair of 13,000 volt main circuit breakers and steam, electricity, and chilled water systems. Responsible for management of Power Plants maintenance function and the operation of the machine shop.  Supervises the Co-Generation Engineers I and II’s,  Electricians and other Maintenance Personnel.  Responsible for total operation of Power Plant in the absence of the Director. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for all maintenance scheduling.
• Responsible for all preventive maintenance.
• Determine work needs, prioritization of work and evaluation of work performed.
• Determine time and procedures utilized for all shutdowns.
• Responsible for maintenance logs.  
• Supervises the operation of an assigned watch for the production of  steam power, electric power and refrigeration.
• Coordinate with Mass Electric when switching incoming power lines and generation of electricity.
• Supervise and operates all high pressure steam boilers with superheaters, economizes and auxiliary equipment.
• Supervise and operates all steam turbine generators, condensers, condensing water pumps and other related auxiliaries, synchronizing the generators when necessary, synchronizing Mass Electric’s cables with the generator when necessary. Log observations. 
• Supervise, performs minor electrical functions (changes fuses, bulbs, checks circuit breakers) etc.
• Supervise power demand and consumption making required adjustments for power factor correction, frequency and voltage. 
• Supervise and operates four (4) electrical power systems, namely, the Uninterrupted Power System, the normal 13,800 volts power distribution system from the utility company, the emergency power system from the standby diesel generator.
• Supervise and operation of all centrifugal compressors, motors, condensing steam turbine-driven, condensing water pumps and other related auxiliaries.  Logs observations.
• Supervise the operation of a large cooling tower and fans serving the turbine and refrigeration systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance, cleaning and repair of all power plant equipment and instrumentation.
• While in the performance of routine duties; may be required, as needed to perform all work associated with all maintenance trades of an equal or lower graded classification; where the work or task does not require a specific license.
• Perform other duties as required.                                                                                 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Massachusetts Second Class Engineer’s License or higher. 
• 2 years experience in modern power plant, operating turbine generators or steam driven chiller experience.
• Must have welding and machine shop skills.
• Must have extensive maintenance experience on all power plant related equipment (example:  pumps, turbines, boilers, etc.).
• Posses the theory and application of good safety practices around high pressure, high voltage systems (13,800 volts) and rotating equipment
• Posses the theory, application and experience in the operation of maintenance of refrigeration and condensing steam turbine-driven centrifugals  compressors, evaporators, condensers and related equipment
• Possess theory, application and experience in the operation of maintenance of refrigeration and condensing steam turbine-driven centrifugal compressor, evaporators, condensers and related equipment.
• Possess theory, application and experience in the operation of large condensing, extracting steam turbo-electric generating equipment and related auxiliaries.
• Posses the theory, application and experience of large high pressure boilers equipped with superheaters, economizers dual fuel systems, pneumatic combustion controls and flame scanners.
• Posses a theoretical knowledge of thermodynamics principals and their application to steam and refrigeration equipment and systems.
• Posses the ability to solve complex operational problems independent of supervision and to assume responsibility for the critical life-support systems.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Exercises direct supervision of the Co-Generation plant with a minimum of two (2) Third Class Engineers (Massachusetts) may supervise one (1) Co-Generation Utility Operator Steam (1^st Fireman Massachusetts) per shift and utility people as needed.

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

May perform work in all Medical Center facilities and is subject to possible exposure to chemicals, gases, electrical shock; may work in confined spaces on ladders. Ability to perform physically arduous tasks; normal dexterity, visual acuity, ability to lift up to 50 lbs., ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolding, and work in confined areas
