Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor or designee, the Freight Handler receives, delivers, and transports parcels, mail, lab specimens, and freight among sites.



  • Responsible for the receiving, delivering and transporting of parcels, mail, lab specimens, confidential material, scientific supplies and freight
  • Responsible for the accurate completion and maintenance of records relating to duties assigned
  • Ensure parcels are properly inspected and inventoried before delivery
  • Responsible for accurate counts and delivery
  • Develop and maintain a functional understanding of electronic documentation requirements for proof of receipt and delivery
  • Transport mail, parcels, specimens, supplies and staff  among various buildings and sites
  • Prepare outgoing shipments
  • Keep up appearance of vehicles. Refuel as needed
  • Develop understanding  of OSHA guidelines  and University policy regarding safe handling and follow policies
  • Look up insufficiently addressed parcels and deliver to the appropriate site/location
  • Assists in work site orientation
  • Perform other duties as assigned



  • High school diploma, or equivalent experience
  • 3 years of experience in receiving and transportation of goods
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proven ability to follow oral and written instructions, and perform basic arithmetic calculations
  • Physical ability to handle bulky and heavy stock items, equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs, and be able to walk long distances
  • Verbal ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to perform manual and clerical tasks of some complexity according to a routine and organized procedure, such as PO lookups and delivering in an orderly fashion
  • Working knowledge of electronic manifest systems preferred. Proof of delivery (POD) experience preferred
  • Ability to work effectively in a team
  • Ability to travel to off- site locations
