  • Overview

    GENERAL SUMMARY:

    Under the direction of the Director for Veterinary Services or designee, the Senior Clinical Veterinarian is responsible for providing and overseeing medical and surgical care to research animals and assuming other programmatic responsibilities. This position is considered essential, and as such requires weekend, holiday, and off-hours coverage as needed and/or on a rotating basis.

     

    Responsibilities

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    Animal Care

     

    • Provide medical and surgical care for all laboratory animals
    • Assume programmatic responsibilities which may include oversight of one or more area of specialization
    • Assist programmatic development                                                                

    Lead Activities                                                   

    • Mentor junior clinical veterinarians and technicians

    Regulatory and Compliance                                                           

    • Review IACUC animal use protocols and provide consultation to investigators on protocol development
    • Develop, update, and implement Standard Operating Procedures
    • Participate as an IACUC member

    Operations                                                           

    • Advance the educational mission of the department through publications, presentations at professional meetings, and teaching or training
    • Assist with departmental budget
    • Serve on or advise UMass committees

    Qualifications

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • DVM/VMD from AVMA approved College of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent
    • License to practice veterinary medicine in a US state
    • ACLAM Board certification or equivalent international certification
    • 3 years of clinical laboratory animal medicine and surgical experience
    • Experience with most common laboratory animals including NHP and genetically engineered animals
    • Computer literacy

    Additional Information

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Completion of ACLAM approved residency program
    • Graduate degree in biomedical science                      
    • MA Veterinary license and USDA certification
    • ABSL 3 experience
    • Management/supervisory experience
