    Under the general direction of the Environmental Health & Safety Manager or designee, the Environmental Health & Safety Specialist II is responsible for helping to protect UMass Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center’s employees, students, contractors, patients, visitors, the general public, and the environment, in compliance with both existing and developing standards and applicable governmental, internal and other agency safety related regulations, requirements and guidelines.


    The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist II will specialize in one of the following specific disciplines within Environmental Health & Safety:

    1. Chemical/Lab Safety and Environmental Compliance (conducting inventories, chemical reviews, lab safety inspections, and hazardous waste);
    2. BioSafety and Select Agent (recombinant DNA, CDC/APHIS, BSL 3, animal biosafety, and infectious materials);
    3. Occupational Safety & Health (ergonomics, respiratory protection , injury prevention and industrial hygiene); or,
    4. Hospital EH&S and General Safety (JC Environment of Care compliance, fire safety, emergency management, construction safety, and OSHA compliance)






    • Assist with implementation and management of Environmental Health & Safety compliance programs.
    • Assist with creating and providing training, advice, technical guidance, and education to personnel, faculty and students on the various Environmental Health and Safety compliance programs. This will include providing proactive methods to raise awareness and knowledge, and correct application of safe work practices and safety principals and procedures.  
    • Conduct worksite evaluations, inspections, audits, investigations, or surveillance surveys for the various environmental health and safety compliance programs. Create and prepare checklists for the inspections. Indentify potential risks and recommend appropriate solutions.
    • Assist in managing EH&S data and databases. Review and analyze data for trends, deficiencies, quality control, and seek solutions.
    • Assist with maintaining records and documentation including training records, waste manifests, MSDS, safety equipment certifications and other regulatory compliance documents.
    • Respond to urgent and emergency calls, questions and requests, including on-call services, following all regulations and procedures. Participate in the EH&S’ Emergency Response Team.
    • Maintain equipment, inventory, and supplies used for compliance management.
    • Write technical safety reports.
    • Participate in review and updating of policies, procedures and safety manuals.
    • Interact with members of the hospital and the scientific community and participate in Institutional Committees providing oral and written reports and briefings.
    • May perform other job related duties as required or requested across all EH&S disciplines.






    •  Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science, Safety, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health and Safety or a related field or equivalent experience
    • Three years of related environmental health & safety experience, preferably experience in these fields in a university or hospital setting
    • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to Environmental Health & Safety, including, EPA, DOT, MADEP, OSHA, MADPH and, J.C. regulations and standards
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office software and database applications
    • Must have a valid driver’s license, ability to travel to off-site locations, and respond to matters of urgency, sometimes after normal working hours
    • Certification as OSHA 40 hour Emergency Responder preferred
    • Some supervisory experience preferred
    • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills in order to interact effectively with different levels of staff
    • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage time effectively




    Discipline in Chemical/Lab Safety, and Environmental Compliance:

    • DOT and RCRA trained for manifest signing.
    • In-depth knowledge of hazardous waste including evaluating wastes, preparing wastes for disposal, preparing disposal documentation, and, distributing and tracking waste manifests. Knowledge of EPA, RCRA, DOT, MADEP hazardous waste and environmental regulations.
    • In-depth knowledge of chemical safety and chemical substances including conducting inventories, performing chemical reviews for toxicology determinations, and compatibility and DEA.
    • In-depth knowledge of lab safety including performing lab safety inspections.
    • Possess aptitude and willingness to safely handle chemical wastes and hazardous chemicals with appropriate equipment and PPE.



    Under the general direction of the Environmental Health & Safety Manager or designee.



    May functionally supervise Safety Technicians or Specialists I.



    May work in conditions where there is construction, chemicals, biological, Power Plant, health care, laboratories, warehouse, pathology lab, outdoors, and on roofs. May require physical capability to lift 55 pounds of material and equipment. Also may require wearing personal protective equipment and utilizing monitoring equipment or spill containment and clean up supplies.
