  • Overview

    GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

    A funded postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. John Landers in the Department of Neurology, University of Massachusetts Medical School (https://www.umassmed.edu/landerslab/).  The lab is interested in investigating the common mechanisms involved in ALS neurodegeneration and using that information to identify molecular targets that will be at the heart of a new class of therapeutics capable of blocking the disease progression of all ALS patients.  This project involves testing the in vivo efficacy of a potential therapeutic target using mouse models of ALS.  Techniques utilized include mouse behavioral studies, cell culture, fluorescent imaging, and other molecular, cellular and biochemical approaches.  Highly motivated scientists with a Ph.D. in cell biology, molecular biology, genetics or related area of study and a strong interest in neurodegenerative disease are encouraged to apply.

    Responsibilities

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Breed, genotype and assess disease stage of transgenic ALS mice
    • Perform surgeries and tissue collection on mice
    • Carry out biochemical and cellular experiments on mouse tissues and immortalized cells
    • Record results, organize and interpret data, give presentations on results.
    • Assist in writing the text of scientific publications and grants. Review literature.
    • Contribute to the maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment.
    • Comply with all safety and infection control standards.
    • Perform other duties as required.

    Qualifications

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

    • PhD in Biological Science or equivalent experience
    • Experience with cell culture and molecular biology techniques
    • Experience with standard biochemical techniques
    • Ability to perform duties independently
    • Judgment and action skills required to troubleshoot encountered problems 

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Experience handling mice and performing surgeries is preferred
