    Commonwealth Medicine is the consulting and health care operations of UMass Medical School.  It does business with state agencies, health plans, patient-centered entities, hospitals, and health care systems and medical institutions throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, nationally and internationally.  The Executive Vice Chancellor for Commonwealth Medicine reports directly to the Chancellor.  This position has overall management responsibility for this large and complex revenue-based operation.  It is entrepreneurial in nature, proactively evaluating the health care market and developing strategies to address these markets.



    • Develop the strategy and positioning for Commonwealth Medicine and related organizations;
    • Manage the operations to diversify revenue streams and maximize resources for several entities with a combined budget of $260 million;
    • Lead a health services and health policy research enterprise to develop innovative, new solutions for the health care market including system design and delivery, and workforce development;
    • Create, sustain and grow business and revenue statewide, nationally and internationally while continuing to develop operational efficiencies and define areas to manage expense;
    • Develop and grow educational / academic programs which serve as leadership development opportunities as well as enhanced external funding;
    • Build leadership depth through leadership development efforts and maintain commitment to diversifying the workforce;
    • Serve as a member of the Chancellor’s Leadership Team;
    • Work collaboratively with leadership and faculty of clinical and research departments to advance UMass Medical School initiatives;
    • Active engagement in the community by serving on local, national and international boards and task forces as representative of the Medical School.



    • Master’s degree required;
    • Experience in working with state and federal government and familiarity with federal funding and payment mechanisms or relevant experience;
    • Senior experience in the administration of diverse and complex organizations;
    • Exceptional proven leadership ability
    • Proven management skills, particularly in the areas of financial and budget management, client relations, talent deployment, professional development and retention;
    • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and demonstrated ability to deal with the public and external entities in an effective manner;
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment and negotiate with diplomacy and tact;
