Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

 

Information Technology at The University of Massachusetts Medical School has a unique opportunity for a User Experience Intern to collaborate with our development team to bring innovative solutions to our students and clients.

 

As part of the development team, the UX Intern will define, champion, and implement user experience best practices for internal and external clients on two to three separate projects. Applying the UX methodologies to the team’s projects and the improved workflows, easier to use interfaces, and a design-thinking approach to solving our student’s and client’s needs is the innovation this internship will focus on:

 

  1. Identifies user requirements by researching and analyzing user needs, preferences, objectives, and working methods.
  2. Design studies to learn how users consume content.
  3. Collect data by meeting with focus groups and conducting usability testing.
  4. Demonstrates how user-centric design fosters innovation and customer satisfaction. 
  5. Proposes user experience architecture by preparing wireframes and/or interactive prototypes.
  6. Coordinates with product owners, content specialist, and developers to integrate site concept, visual design, writing, interface, and navigational structure.

 

Internship will culminate in the creation of a UX Best Practices Protocols to guide future development. The resulting Best Practices Protocol document would be a concise and well thought out guide for future development at UMASS. This guide would be the result of customer interviews, user research, design workshops, interactive prototyping, and hands-on involvement in application development and planning.

Responsibilities

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Utilize innovative ideas and approaches to assist in the development of working models to serve the needs of our faculty, students and researchers
  • Complete a project from start to finish and write-up and present the work product to the UMass community
  • Participate in team projects
  • Conduct online research
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Must be a currently enrolled student in a higher education institution or recent graduate
  • Solid analytical and communication skills
  • Attention to detail with the ability to collect and record information from a wide variety of sources
  • Must be reliable and able to set consistent work hours
  • Proven interest in IT and passion in furthering the mission of UMMS
  • Must have above average academic performance

  • Outstanding communicator who can present information concisely across a variety of media
  • Outstanding listener with an attention to detail
  • Confidence while presenting to groups and upper management
  • An established track record of delivering on commitments
  • Familiar with or can quickly learn wireframing applications
  • Familiar with usability and accessibility best practices
  • A developing understanding of current trends and best practices in user experience design and research
  • A passion for achieving results on time through the application of technology to business opportunities
