The Executive Director for Innovation & Business Development (ED-IBD) reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Innovation & Business Development (EVC-IBD).  The ED-IBD will provide the vision and skills to help the EVC-IBD formulate and execute a comprehensive and strategic business strategy to strengthen and enlarge the size, scope and impact of the UMMS research enterprise by leveraging the commercialization of the medical school’s intellectual property portfolio through the development of alliances, collaborations, agreements, and partnerships. The incumbent will be personally accountable for identification of internal research projects and assets with commercial potential.  The ED-IBD will also assist with structuring, negotiating, and implementing a variety of transactions with external entities, including bio-pharmaceutical companies, research institutes, hospitals, and academic institutions and will work collaboratively with the Executive Director of the Office of Technology Management and his staff.



  • Help lead the identification, evaluation, and selection of potential commercially viable projects from the entire UMMS research portfolio
  • In collaboration with the whole IBD team, consult with faculty members about internal pre-clinical development activities for select projects/assets to dramatically increase their partnering value
  • Lead the development of competitive analyses of companies, products and market research in support of UMMS’s commercial strategy
  • Identify potential partners for sponsored research agreements
  • Give guidance to faculty and campus leadership in the commercialization process and in understanding business and market trends in the health care sector
  • Identify and actively manage relationships with existing and potential partners/ entrepreneurs to help develop products from UMMS intellectual property
  • Provide timely communications and recommendations for action to ensure successful business/economic development outcomes
  • Interface with other UMass campuses and President’s office regarding technology development, industry engagement, and entrepreneurship
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required



  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree with a very strong preference for a terminal scientific or medical degree (Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D.) in a life sciences relevant field, or a business degree (M.B.A.) with relevant scientific experience
  • 7-10 years of related experience with business development and commercial innovation
  • Strong scientific orientation with demonstrated success in technology development, commercialization strategy, and the development and management of partnerships and collaborations
  • A track record of experience with the bio-pharmaceutical industry, ideally including success in starting and growing companies as a venture capitalist and/or extensive experience in a business development role
  • Experience working in multiple therapeutic/disease areas
  • Maintains a network of relevant professionals across academia and industry that can be leveraged to advance UMMS’s strategic and financial objectives
  • Experience in leading successful transactions within the bio-pharmaceutical and academic worlds, including complex negotiations among executive-level and scientific colleagues
  • Outstanding skills to influence and inspire others, initiating and building strong relationships with leading scientists, technical experts, business executives and entrepreneurs
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively interact with business leadership at external entities and with research and clinical faculty and staff
